Sponge Iron or porous pellets is obtained from the direct reduction of iron ore pellets and has a high grade that ranges from 34 to 95%. The process of direct reduction of iron ore removes the oxygen in the iron ore and forms the stone into a spongy porous structure, which is why it is called sponge iron. In addition, it is also produced in compressed form and briquette, which is called hot bridled iron (HBI).
Application of sponge iron
Sponge iron has many applications, the most important of which is to replace waste iron in induction furnaces, which is used to produce ingots and other steel products. So that in these furnaces, up to 50% of sponge iron can be used instead of scrap.
